The Gir Cow

One of the famous milk cattle breed of India. The breed derives its name from the Gir forest, which is the natural habitat of the breed. The Gir is a native tract of the Gir hills and forests of Kathiawar including Junagadh, Bhavnagar, Rajkot and Amreli districts of Gujarat. The Gir breed is famous for its resistance to various tropical diseases and tolerance to stress conditions. Thus is the reson for it being imported by countries like Brazil, Mexico, USA and Venezuela where they are being bred successfully. It is one of the principal Zebu or Bos indicus breeds in India, and has been used locally in the improvement of other breeds. These animals contribute significantly to the total milk production of Gujarat State.
